okay actually im just gonna vent, there are triggers in the tags but: negativity on halloween, depression/apathy, slow platonic breakups, autistic sensory meltdowns, fomo, parental issues, wasting time, new girl spoilers
im hiding in my bedroom because i had to load the dishwasher and i hate loading the dishwasher bc of the smell of dish water and the thought of touching food on dishes and andjsjdj i hate it
and my brother invited his friends over and i haven't showered but i also am wearing like a pj shirt and no bra and i don't want to put a bra/binder on because ill just get it dirty bc i have to shower tonight but i don't want them to be weird (my brother is still in high school lol) and i got in a fight with my mom and i spent like 3 hours making cookies and watching new girl and going in the bathroom to hide so i could stim about new girl and it feels like i didn't do anything productive?? or like i wasted a bunch of time??
capitalist brain rot goes crazy
i wanna go out and join but i really don't want to talk to my mom or put a bra on but it's halloween and i had a whole plan about what i was going to do when i was home alone and then i wasn't home alone because my mom got drunk and changed her plans and came home to hand out candy and i spent way too long making cookies bc the butter was frozen and i was watching nick and jess get married
im making cookies for my friend (T) that's been sick for like a week and she hasn't answered any of my texts and we've been growing apart and i hate it so much we were so close last year and now im so damn lonely all the time which is why i was so excited to goof off with my brothers friends tonight but i feel like i blew it
another friend (L) and i had this whole elaborate inside joke about my immortal, we would recite the first chapter to each other and watched strange æons reading of it for 1M subscribers and made ebony in the sims and woohooed her to mortimer goth
and in like may we said we were gonna dress up as ebony and draco for halloween, but then we kinda stopped talking and when i texted her to see if she still wanted to she said idk. so like. then i come to find that she is dating this guy (who's one of our mutual friend's ex), and he was the one that told me L and him were going out. She's been out as a lesbian for going on 6 years now, and like obviously sexuality is fluid and im happy for her and etc etc, im not saying she lied to me about her sexuality or that their relationship doesn't mean anything (/gen) because i know nothing about it. which is like,, kinda my point, she likes a guy, and she never told me?? it's not that i feel entitled to know everything about who she fancies but like, this feels big to me and was like a thing like "wow we really never talk. i really like, barely know you anymore and you were my best friend 5 months ago"
anyway all that is to say, L's bf was mario and she was wearing a pink top and a crown so like. what???

A birthday fic for the lovely and amazing @desperatelyseekingcannibals. Happy birthday, my dear Max, hope you enjoy <3<3<3
Thanks to @slashyrogue for the title, and @tcbook and @hotmolasses for advice on writing smut scenes (and for generally being amazingly patient and wonderful).
Also on AO3.
Mortimer slid quietly along the hallway and snuck a peek into the waiting room, hoping that no one would notice him in such an undignified act. Not that he didn’t spend all day engaged in what many people would no doubt term undignified acts, but at least those took place behind closed doors. Fortunately, the inhabitants of the waiting room seemed to have their direction focussed on quite another subject – the same subject that had caused Mortimer to sneak around without his shoes on.
Seated on a chair at the far side of the room was quite the most unusual patient Mortimer had seen on these premises (which, not to be uncharitable, was saying something). For a start, he was a man, and this practice was strictly ladies only (other than the doctors, of course). Then there was the matter of his hair, which was the colour of pewter and worn in a thick braid that hung over one shoulder, in a manner which made him look nothing short of a barbarian. Mortimer rather suspected he could fight like one too – despite his unremarkable clothing (rough-looking greatcoat, in a shade of grey to match his hair, untailored trousers, beaten-up workman’s boots), the man had a bearing that suggested impressive strength. A former soldier, was Mortimer’s immediate impression.
None of which explained why this rather intimidating specimen had, about half an hour previously, strode into the practice and demanded an immediate appointment with Mortimer himself. Mortimer squinted at his face, trying to recollect if their paths might ever have crossed previously. It was, Mortimer had to admit, rather an interesting face to examine, all angles and sharp edges, yet with an elegance that put him in mind of an ancient sculpture. Or perhaps an ancient rock face. Interesting or not, though, he had no memories of this man, and no reason to grant him an audience.
It had been rather a routine week so far, though…
Intrigued despite himself, Mortimer slipped back to his office, replaced his shoes, and returned to the waiting room. He first excused himself to Mrs Bellamy and asked for her patience in enduring a short delay to her appointment, for which he received a coquettish pout and a giggle in response. He then crossed to the far wall and offered his hand to his mysterious visitor as he rose from his seat.
“I am Doctor Granville. I believe you insisted upon meeting me somewhat firmly, Mr…?”
“Draco will be fine, Doctor Granville. I don’t stand on ceremony.”
Mortimer couldn’t help allowing a brow to rise at this unusual behaviour but otherwise schooled any reaction behind a polite smile. “Mr Draco then,” he said, unable to make himself give up on an honorific completely, “I am terribly sorry to inform you that I have no appointments available today.”
“I will return tomorrow, in that case.”
“I’m afraid I have no appointments free at all for at least a fortnight.”
“You keep none for emergencies?”
“We are not providers of an emergency service, Mr Draco.”
“I shall return each day in hopes of a cancellation, in that case.”
Mortimer wanted desperately to ask if he had no decent employment during working hours but propriety would not allow the words to pass his lips. Instead, he observed the glint of determination in Draco’s eyes and concluded that he would not be brushed off so easily. Acquiescence seemed to be the surest route to ridding himself of this puzzling individual but it wasn’t in Mortimer’s nature to so easily bow down and give in to men’s desires.
“All right, Mr Draco, I shall make you a deal. I will see each of my patients according to their appointments and you will make no further attempts to interfere with my schedule. In return, if you are still here at the close of the day and have managed not to make any more of a nuisance of yourself than you already have, I will see you in my office. Is that acceptable?”
“More than.” Draco gave a little bow – intended as mockery, Mortimer had no doubt – and retook his seat, crossing his remarkably long legs in front of him with a flourish.
“Well then,” Mortimer said, a little rattled by Draco’s behaviour. He stood awkwardly for a moment, and then turned and fled back to his office, hoping against hope that Mr Draco would get bored of his strange little game and be gone by the time he had finished with his next appointment.
The gods were not smiling upon him today though, not entirely to Mortimer’s surprise. He checked throughout the rest of the day, accompanying a number of his patients back to the waiting room rather than leaving them at his door as usual. And each time he was greeted by a softly-smirking Draco who, on one occasion, actually had the gall to wink at him across the room. At least, Mortimer thought it was a wink, it might have been a spasm.
By the time he bid goodbye to his final scheduled patient of the day, Mortimer was resigned to having to make good on his agreement and trod back to the now-empty waiting room where Draco greeted him with a smile that showed the sharp points of his teeth. Mortimer wondered for a moment just what he had let himself in for, but pulled himself together and gestured at Draco to follow him through to his office.
As they passed through the corridor, Mortimer began to try to discover what this strange man’s business was in coming here. “I must enquire whether you are aware of the nature of our practice here?” he asked.
Draco gave no answer to this, though Mortimer supposed the minute smirk that flashed across his face was answer enough. Still, he forged ahead, wishing for there to be no misunderstanding. “In this clinic we are solely devoted to the treatment of women’s issues.” Mortimer uttered the phrase in a hushed tone for the sake of propriety, knowing even as he did so that it was a ridiculous affectation given that everyone still present in the building was well aware of exactly what kind of treatment he and Doctor Dalrymple provided. Apparently Draco agreed, his smirk fair turning into a leer that made Mortimer’s stomach flip in a most peculiar fashion.
They had reached his door by this point, and Mortimer paused outside it. “Sir,” he stated, riled and concerned by Draco’s reaction, “if you are here to cause trouble or to gather salacious gossip, I will have you removed from the premises without delay.”
Draco help up his hands in a placating gesture. “Calm yourself, Doctor, I mean no offence nor intend anything salacious.” Mortimer had his doubts about that from the way Draco’s accent – something European, thick and honeyed – rolled around the word, but decided it would be easier to hear him out than to call in the police. He had no illusions that he could remove this brute under his own power without serious consequences to his state of being. Instead he opened his office door and ushered Draco inside, gesturing to the chairs opposite his desk for Draco to take one.
Once they were both settled, Mortimer locked his gaze with Draco’s and told him, “I would be most obliged, Mr Draco, if you could state what your intentions actually are in attending this specific practice.”
“Don’t remember me, do you, Doctor Granville?”
Oh, this man was quite infuriating! “Can you not answer a question straight, sir?” Mortimer asked, forgetting his manners in his irritation. “No, I do not recall having seen you in all of my existence.”
“Suppose you see a lot of faces coming and going in your line of work. I’ll try not to be hurt that you’ve forgotten.” Really, the smug expression on Mr Draco’s face was too much, and Mortimer had to grit his teeth in order not to bear them at the impudent way he spoke. Instead, he kept himself together and extrapolated the meaning of Draco’s implications.
“I treated you at some point in the past, is that it?”
“Indeed, Doctor Granville, you saw me in the hospital a couple of years ago. Kept going on about little animals crawling around my body.”
Mortimer squeezed the bridge of his nose between his fingers, steeling himself for the inevitable barrage of mockery.
“You’re a smart one, Doctor, what you said made a lot of sense for anybody willing to listen.” Mortimer’s head snapped up in surprise. “Put me back together almost as good as new, as well. I thought to myself then, if ever my health was in danger, I wouldn’t settle for anyone else’s treatment.”
Mortimer had absolutely no idea what to say to that, having expected derision and instead received more respect and admiration from this man than any other person about his dedication to modern medical practices. He gaped at Draco, he couldn’t help himself, and knew that colour was climbing into his cheeks. Needing to regain control, he chose to ignore the compliment entirely and instead proceed as he might with any normal patient.
“All right, Mr Draco, given that you have gone to such trouble to seek me out, I assume that you are suffering from some difficulty with your health. If you would describe your symptoms, I will determine whether or not you require further examination.”
“As you wish, Doctor. It is… a little embarrassing, I must warn you.”
Mortimer doubted that somehow, but delivered his standard response to anxious patients regardless. “Please, Mr Draco, I can assure you there is nothing you can say that would shock me. Do go on.”
“Well, you see, lately I have been having trouble finishing.”
“Finishing?”
“Sexually, Doctor Granville. I have no trouble rising to the occasion, as it were, but no matter how I try – and I have tried extremely hard, Doctor – I seem unable to bring myself to a satisfying conclusion.”
“I see. That s-sounds extremely upsetting. I am not- not surprised you sought a medical opinion,” Mortimer stuttered out. Perhaps he should have been expecting it – why else would a man insist on being seen in this clinic – but instead he was entirely taken aback. Did this mean… Was Mr Draco asking…
“Your medical opinion, specifically,” Draco said, interrupting Mortimer’s train of thought before it derailed entirely. “Word has spread about the services you offer in this clinic of yours, Doctor Granville. I thought perhaps your talents might stretch to patients of the masculine persuasion.”
Oh. He certainly was asking, then.
“How, um, long have these symptoms been affecting you?” Mortimer asked, deliberately stalling.
“Oh, for quite some time,” Draco responded, entirely unhelpfully.
“Mmm-hmm. And I take it the results are equally unsatisfactory whether you are with a partner or,” Mortimer coughed delicately, “taking matters into your own hand?”
“Would that I had the opportunity to compare, Doctor.”
Mortimer barely kept from rolling his eyes. Clearly questioning this man was going to be of little help. A hands-on approach appeared to be the best strategy – it was Mortimer’s speciality, after all.
“Well then, Mr Draco, since you appear determined to obfuscate, I believe it will be best if we get on with the physical examination.”
“Do with me as you see fit,” Draco said, and really, the man seemed able to make anything sound suggestive, it was quite outrageous. No wonder Mortimer had to scramble to remember how to speak for a moment.
“Ah… yes… well then,” he flailed, trying to pull himself together under Draco’s amused gaze. “If you would just move over to the examination table, we can begin.”
Draco obeyed, thankfully with no more than a cordial nod in Draco’s direction, though the way he moved as he crossed the room was, if anything, more suggestive than his words. He put Mortimer in mind of a big cat; a lion perhaps, all lazy grace and coiled power, shoulders rolling and hips swaying in one fluid curve.
Mortimer couldn’t help but gaze at his progress, before wrapping his professionalism round himself like armour. Never yet had he allowed a pretty face or a flirtatious manner to distract him, and this unsubtle show would not be the first to break him.
“If you would be so good as to remove your clothing below the waist, Mr Draco. I’m afraid I will have to proceed without the usual screen in place, in order for me to observe your responses. I hope that won’t be a problem.”
“No problem at all, Doctor.” And indeed, Draco proceeded to remove boots, britches and underclothes in short order, without a hint of the embarrassment to which he earlier referred. Following which, quite to Mortimer’s shock, he shucked off his shirt and vest as well, easing himself onto the table – really more of a lounge chair, with its reclining position and button back – just as naked as the day he was born.
“Don’t want to get stains on anything,” he remarked, his expression aiming at innocence and landing on devilry instead.
Confronted with the long, bronzed line of Draco’s naked form, Mortimer found he could not look away, hoping that his patient assumed he was taking stock of his physical condition for purely medical purposes.
The twinkle in Draco’s eyes suggested he believed that about as much as Mortimer himself. Well, that and the fact that his prodigious length, already half-hard, twitched expectantly under Mortimer’s gaze.
“I, ah, see you were telling the truth regarding your ability to become aroused,” Mortimer said, watching as Draco’s member continued to thicken with something bordering on fascination.
“Dishonesty would have done me little good.”
“Quite.” Mortimer took a deep breath and stretched his hands, considering how best to start. “If I might begin by testing your sensitivity, Mr Draco.”
“You know best, Doctor.”
Mortimer wasn’t quite sure he did, in this situation, but hummed in agreement anyway, and then positioned himself at the side of the table, realising that his normal position at its foot wouldn’t do. Draco’s eyes followed him closely as he did so, and Mortimer felt pinned beneath them, heat rising to his face in a most unprofessional manner. As if to show that he would not be intimidated, he reached out with one finger and gently stroked the underside of Draco’s cock, tracing the ridge that ran the length of it. Draco hissed in response, and his member stiffened fully.
Mortimer couldn’t help his triumphant smile. “How did that feel, Mr Draco?”
“Very pleasant, Doctor Granville.”
Oh, so that was the game. Well then.
“Excellent. Now please, lie as still as you can.” With which, Mortimer took a firm grasp of Draco’s shaft and gave it a few long, dry strokes, just short of too rough. This time, Draco’s response wasn’t a hiss, but a grunt of surprise that turned into a moan as Mortimer grazed the pad of his thumb against his slit, checking for pre-ejaculate. “Hmm, rather dry, is that normal for you?”
Draco shot him a wry look but answered easily enough: “Recently, yes.”
“Ah well, age comes to us all,” Mortimer said, gently thumbing at the rim of Draco’s foreskin.
“I do not – ah – do not think that is the issue.” Draco shifted on the bed a little, perhaps trying to keep his hips from rising.
“No?” Mortimer raised an eyebrow at Draco’s statement. “Well, nevertheless, I believe some lubrication will assist in our examination, if you will excuse me a moment.” He released Draco’s member – noting with amusement the almost imperceptible pout the man gave in response – and went to retrieve one of the small pots of oil he kept discreetly stored near the bed (after all, ladies often also benefited from a little help to ease the way). His patient appeared entirely unperturbed by its appearance, and Mortimer wondered if perhaps his reluctance to discuss partners was less down to their scarcity than to the type of person Draco took to his bed.
The thought caused a little jolt to run down Mortimer’s spine – and not an entirely unpleasant one, either.
He unscrewed the pot and dipped his fingers in, coating his hand liberally as Draco’s eyes tracked his every movement, hard to the point where the head of his dick was turning purple where it emerged from his foreskin. Mortimer thought that it looked almost painful and took mercy on his patient – he was sworn to do no harm, after all – returning his hand to its former position and letting it glide down to the base and back again. Draco’s groan was louder this time, and he grinned wolfishly at Mortimer.
“A great improvement, Doctor. You really do have a gift.”
If only he knew the truth of that statement, Mortimer thought, but kept it to himself and instead returned Draco’s grin with a polite smile of his own. “All in a day’s work, Mr Draco. Now,” he continued, beginning to stroke in earnest, “I understand from what you’ve told me that getting to this point of arousal is not generally problematic for you?”
Draco’s head tipped back against the headrest, exposing the long line of his throat, already beginning to gleam with sweat. “Not generally, no,” he agreed, his last word turning into a moan as Mortimer twisted his hand a little on his upstroke.
“Mmm, and could you describe to me at what point your difficulties begin?” Mortimer’s voice was a little roughened, almost husky, as he questioned Draco, as though it was he becoming aroused by this activity. He cleared his throat, annoyed at himself, and waited for Draco to gather himself enough to respond.
“Usually… usually I seem to – ahh – reach a kind of… kind of plateau,” Draco panted out, words trapped between gasps and moans. “Can’t seem to… to tip over… oh, that’s good, Doc, don’t – ah, don’t stop, ohhh…”
Draco’s hips were bucking in earnest now, and Mortimer decided to take control by laying his unoccupied arm flat against his patient’s torso, pinning him to the bed. This, apparently, excited Draco even more, his moaning becoming louder and more shameless as Mortimer held him down with one hand and continued to stroke and tug with the other.
This display pulled down the last of Mortimer’s defences – there was no point in denying he was as aroused as the man lying under him, his own member straining within his trousers. He couldn’t reach down to take any of the pressure off, and Mortimer realised he was rubbing himself against the frame of the table, matching the rhythm of his strokes up and down Draco’s cock. He felt electrified with desire, entirely blindsided by his effect on this gloriously beautiful man.
He ought to have been watching Draco’s cock, checking for any physical oddities, any abnormal reactions, but any pretences that this was a genuine examination were long abandoned. Instead, Mortimer found he couldn’t drag his eyes from Draco’s face as it contorted with pleasure, mouth slack, breath short, eyes hooded and dark. Through the haze of bliss, Draco seemed to realise Mortimer’s focus had shifted and tilted his head so their eyes connected.
Mortimer couldn’t contain the little exclamation – oh – that escaped as Draco looked deep inside him, and it was enough to bring both he and Draco to climax, sweating and writhing and shouting for the gods, Draco’s pleasure flowing warm and thick across Mortimer’s wrist and down his arm.
Mortimer stroked him through his orgasm, until Draco shuddered with oversensitivity and he released his grip. He found he couldn’t move away though, or form the kind of detached, doctorly pronouncement his patient was no doubt expecting, not with the evidence of his lapse of professionalism spreading warm and wet inside his trousers. Instead, his hands hovered over Draco’s flushed thighs, wanting to touch, wanting to crawl up onto the table and continue to wring those noises from Draco. Wanting Draco to wring them from him in return.
Of course, he did nothing of the sort. It would have been entirely inappropriate.
Though not, perhaps, as inappropriate as what Draco himself said, once he had his breath back.
“So it is true what they say, once you’ve known the touch of divinity nothing will ever compare.” Draco sought out Mortimer’s eyes, which were already widening in shock, and added, “My Lady Aphrodite.”
Well, fuck.
Mortimer briefly considered trying to locate a weapon and battering Draco about the head. But his fighting skills were rusty after several decades quietly hiding amongst humanity and Draco looked alert and formidable despite his post-orgasmic lassitude. Besides, he had been caught fair and square, and he probably should find out how and for what reason before attempting escape.
Mortimer – otherwise known as Aphrodite, goddess of love, pleasure and procreation, former denizen of Mount Olympus, currently on self-approved sabbatical from his divine duties – sighed. “I really thought this disguise was infallible.”
Draco grinned. “It almost was. Zeus knew your general location but you did an admirable job of masking your exact whereabouts. I must commend you.”
“Oh fuck your commendation, how did you find me?”
Draco smirked. Mortimer wanted to punch him. “If only you’d been able to resist the temptation, little goddess. You were safe and sound in your hospitals, trying to convince all those poor, naïve humans about the importance of hygiene. But it was too good, wasn’t it? The prospect of bringing pleasure to so many again. Just couldn’t pass it up, to feel the thrill of it, help those poor women feel good. Just a little touch of your power to ease the way, couldn’t hurt, could it?”
Mortimer sighed. How stupid of him, how arrogant to think he could get away with it unnoticed. Honestly though, how was he, the goddess of love, sex incarnate, supposed to turn down the opportunity to provide orgasms on a regular basis? When Dalrymple had reeled off his nonsense about hysteria during their initial interview, Mortimer had nearly fallen out of his chair at the realisation of what was being offered.
“So the little story about seeing me at the hospital? Your supposed difficulty in climaxing? What was the point of that?”
“I needed you to trust me enough to put your hands on me, Doctor.” Draco raked his eyes along Mortimer’s body, the damp patch in his trousers, shameless now that he had revealed himself. “Only way to be sure you were the one I was sent to find.”
“A neat trick. Did Zeus lend you some magic?”
“Daresay he would have, but it was unnecessary. Your kind always feel different, if only a man cares to pay attention.”
“And you do pay very close attention, don’t you? To my backside in particular, I must note.” Two could play at the shameless game.
“It’s a very fine backside, my Lady, even by divine standards.”
Mortimer rolled his eyes, but let himself grin with it. He had to admit, he’d missed sparring like this – the bumbling doctor routine had been a useful one, but he had been forced to play frightfully earnest at times. Some good, old fashioned flirting was quite a relief after being so buttoned up. In fact, Mortimer decided to take advantage of his regained freedom by climbing up onto the table and settling himself atop Draco’s extremely well-muscled thighs while he continued his interrogation.
Draco, happily, seemed completely unfazed by this, and simply placed his large hands against Mortimer’s hips for support.
“So then, soldier – you are a soldier, yes?”
Draco inclined his head in confirmation.
“Thought so, you seem like a man who would be comfortable with killing. So, what does my father want so urgently of me that he would force one of his toy soldiers out of heaven to hunt me down?”
To his credit, Draco didn’t so much as flinch at the insult. “No force was required, Lady, I volunteered.”
“Bored of eternal quaffing and carousing, were we?”
“A break is nice, little god, but eventually a man grows weary of existence without purpose, wouldn’t you agree?”
“You are quite fascinating, aren’t you Mr Draco? And very good at evading my questions. Once again: why does my father request my presence?”
Draco’s smile turned wry. “A war is coming, my Lady. Olympus is threatened and Zeus demands that all his children do their duty.”
“And I suppose if I don’t come quietly he’ll start chucking lightning bolts into Charing Cross?” Mortimer poked Draco, immediately regretting it – the man’s chest might as well have been a breastplate. “All I wanted was a few hundred years of me time, was that really so much to ask? I’m not even any use in battle – I’m a lover, not a fighter.” He laid his hand flat against Draco’s chest, considering. “And you, Captain? How will they reward you for completing your mission?”
“I will be returned to Elysium, to eternal peace and celebration.”
“How ghastly. I have a better idea,” Mortimer said, leaning in to press a soft kiss to Draco’s lips, chasing it with a flick of his tongue. “There, how do you feel?”
“Unsatisfied.”
“Odd. Most people say ‘tingly.’ Let’s try that again.”
This time the kiss was deep, filthy, and several minutes long. By the time it finished, Mortimer had a tight grip on Draco’s braid, Draco an equally strong hold of Mortimer’s much-admired backside, and both were flushed and panting for breath.
Mortimer leaned back a little, in order to look at Draco property. “So?”
“I am not certain tingly quite covers it.”
Mortimer grinned in triumph. “Excellent. Captain Draco, you are now bound to me, unable to leave my side, devoted to me above all others.”
Draco looked entirely unfazed.
“Which means you will attend me in battle, as my captain and consort.”
Draco continued to fail to react.
“I have just stolen you from Zeus himself for my own pleasure! He is not going to be pleased with either of us. Surely you have something to say about that?”
Draco shrugged lightly, and Mortimer once again considered battering him with something heavy. Fortunately, his new paramour finally decided to break his silence. “This means I will spend my foreseeable future fighting when required and fucking when desired?”
“Well… basically, yes.”
“Then I believe Zeus can go fuck himself,” Draco drawled, and dragged Mortimer into another devouring kiss.
Mortimer smiled into it. This one was going to keep him entertained for aeons.

20 questions - writer's edition
Thank you for the tag, @insertmeaningfulusername dear! I’m just a bit late but here I am!
How many works do you have on AO3? 100! I reached the milestone with my Summer Alphabet.
What's your total AO3 word count? 349,188, considering that I mostly translate stuff and write drabbles.
How many fandoms have you written for and what are they? Does it really count as I mostly write drabbles? Some with no real knowledge of the fandoms as it was gifts to friends who wanted me to try my hand at them. But it would be fortyish I guess, here is the list: All Souls Trilogy - Deborah Harkness, Arsène Lupin, Au revoir là-haut (2017), Ben-Hur (1959), Blake and Mortimer, Call Me By Your Name, Captain America, Carol (2015), Bible (Old Testament), Cyrano de Bergerac - Edmond Rostand, Fragments d'éternité - Séverine Mikan, Fullmetal Alchemist, Gaston (Bande Dessinée), Good Omens, Hannibal (TV), Harry Potter, His Dark Materials, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell - Susanna Clarke, Kingsman (Movies), Lady Chatterley’s Lover (2015), Notre-Dame des Fleurs | Our Lady of the Flowers - Jean Genet, One Piece, Penny Dreadful (TV), Hercule Poirot, Portrait de la jeune fille en feu | Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019) , Pride and Prejudice, Sherlock (TV), Sherlock Holmes, Spirou et Fantasio, Supernatural, The Epic of Gilgamesh, The Lord of the Rings (Movies), Tipping the Velvet (TV), Versailles (TV 2015), Wide Sargasso Sea - Jean Rhys, X-Men (Alternate Timeline Movies), A la Recherche du Temps Perdu, Gentleman Jack, A Song of Ice and Fire
What are your top 5 fics by kudos? They are a mix of old and new things, not necessarily the best things, that being said.
1. L’Alphabet de l’été 2018 (a daily drabble wrote during the summer, using as prompt an unusal word)
2. Tell me what it is beauty. (An Holmescest, wrote eons ago)
3. When we were young (an AU in which Charles and Erik are uni roommates)
4. A morning guy (an AU in which Harry and Draco are muggles and get to know each other because of transportation strike)
5.Now from the beginning (A retirement!lock, a wee bit sad)
Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? Of course I do, it would be rude of me to moan on the lack of comments if I did not. Anyway, people take time to read and comment, I can take time to reply. (except if people are downright rude, of course)
What's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending? Not necessarily angsty but quite sad is the retirement!lock aforementioned.
What's the fic you've written with the happiest ending? I mostly write drabbles but I think I do try to make my characters fairly happy.
Do you write crossovers? If so, what is the craziest one you've written? I do! I wrote a fic for a Secret Santa back in 2019 in which many characters get to meet each other including, Remus Lupin, Charles Xavier, Erik Lehnsherr, Sirius Black, Isidore Beautrelet and Arsène Lupin.
Have you ever received hate on a fic? Some not very kind words in my early days, but it’s been ages. (Yes, I know I have not given them back the “minutes of their existence they lost reading my fic”.
Do you write smut? If so, what kind? I do! Much less than I used to, but mlm and wlw, very occasionally some het thingie but that would be clumsy as hell...
Have you ever had a fic stolen? No and I hope it would never be the case.
Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes, thank you very much for that @tinaxpow! ♥
Have you ever co-written a fic before? Yep! A whole lotta lot but very few got published in the end. Now and then I co-write a drabble collection with admamu, Charlism, its ceremonies, its followers, in French and I translate it in English.
What's your all-time favourite ship? Probably Cherik, I think.
What's a WIP you want to finish but don't think you ever will? Most of the projects that are not drabbles but I would think The Man at the Museum and Graymalkin College ou les Errements de Charles F. Xavier.
What are your writing strengths? Strengths? Erm... I’m quite good at writing ‘true’ 100-word drabbles.
What are your writing weaknesses? Just like you, Step, I can’t focus on long stuff. I would start something just for the pleasure of writing something or some scene but would not get the plot forward. My sentences are way too intricated but I would consider it more a choice than a weakness.
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic? I love it! I love languages, I love the genuineness of it. Just like knowing the brand of tea characters drink or the tiny details that give a feeling of the country they live in or their culture is very precious and dear to me.
What was the first fandom you wrote for? Harry Potter, just after I finished the seventh book, back in 2007.
What's your favourite fic you've written? Charlism, its ceremonies, its followers all the way.
Tagging (as always no obligation) whoever wants to do it but also if you feel like, @sherlock-is-no-sociopath , @jamlavender :)

Walk side by side, and we'll be one.
© Indian Wisdom Author's notes: So, I don't know how to write fan fiction at all. But! On fikbuka ended works that are dedicated to Harry/OZHP,and I thought that I should write something like this myself, because I hate the canon.
1.1 The beginning of the path
August 31, 1991.
The rain is always the same, it doesn't change, but we look at it differently. Autumn rain brings sadness and reflection, winter rain brings slush and swell, spring rain brings joy and thunder, inspiring reverence, summer rain often brings coolness and pulls you out of a hot day into a completely different space.
The young sorceress loved rain at any time of the year. He creates for her an incredible atmosphere of lightness and alienation, which is so often needed by every person.
How relaxing it is to watch the drops rolling down the window, people who have fallen under the "natural" shower, or just sit on the windowsill, plunging into their fairy-tale world, in which there is no evil, but harmony and good reigns.
- Maddie, honey… Come down quickly, " a melodious female voice called from the first floor of the house.
Just as the girl was about to answer, a loud thunder suddenly thundered, causing her to squeak in surprise and jump to the side.
"I'm coming, Mom!" Madeline shouted, and after another glance at the window, she hurried out of the room.
When she went downstairs, she saw a rather interesting picture: her mother was trying to insert candles with the inscription "Congratulations!" into the cake, and her father was licking the cream around the edges and smearing it on his wife's nose.
***
Fergus and Fridesvida Mortimer are the best parents in the world, and they are also talented wizards. They met while still students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, despite the fact that they studied at different faculties. Father-Slytherin, and mother-Ravenclaw. According to my mother, my father always bullied her, but not because he didn't like her, but on the contrary, in this way he wanted to attract attention. Dad's parents-Richard Mortimer and Adeline-Fryderika Mortimer-never liked their daughter-in-law, and when they had a daughter, and the father decided to leave the family estate, they stopped having any relations with him.
***
Pausing at the doorway, Maddie giggled softly, drawing her parents ' attention.
"My dear! You took so long to get down. We've already thought of sending Crocus after you! Mom chirped, clapping her hands.
Fridesvida Mortimer is the most beautiful woman in the world. Despite her age, she looks like a young girl who has just begun to blossom. Her light brown, soft and silky hair was the envy of any woman, and her eyes were ... blue… With small flecks of emerald, they drive anyone nearby crazy.
Fergus Mortimer — a man with a stately figure, regular features and aristocratic appearance. His jet-black hair was always beautifully coiffed, his small moustache added charm to his face, and his green eyes, which stood out vividly against the background of his figure, aroused admiration and a certain envy. He was always the best-looking boy at school, and after that he remains a favorite for gossip among the ladies.
Madeline Mortimer is a mix of her parents. Genetics decided to play with her, and therefore the different eye color-blue and green is the highlight of the younger member of the family. Her shoulder-length black curly hair, upturned nose, and plump cheeks made her truly beautiful, incredible, and sweet.
- Today is a beautiful weather, I was looking at it ... - I answered and went closer to the table. On it were all sorts of goodies: cupcakes, rolls, fruit and my favorite sweets, and most importantly-a chocolate cake, with various swirls and zigzags, leaves and twigs.
— I still don't see how you can enjoy this nasty weather." Who would have thought that you like rain and dampness! My mother shouted, and put her hand on her forehead with an exaggerated sigh.
"Well, ma-am..." the curly — haired one drawled. — We've already discussed this. Before I could continue, there was another thunderclap, and I dropped the candy from my mouth in surprise.
Rain was rain, and loud noises always frightened little Mortimer. Sometimes, even after the pencil falls, it takes her a minute to recover, what can I say about the thunder.
"Oh-oh-oh... little Maddie is afraid of thunder," Dad drawled, and laughed out loud.
— I'm not afraid of anything!" It was just unexpected! Madeline shouted, wrinkling her nose and puffing out her cheeks as she sat down at the table.
"Of course, of course, you little coward —" my father squeaked in my voice, and threw a marshmallow in my daughter's direction.
- Dad! Mom! Tell him! - unable to stand it, the youngest of the family threw this very marshmallow at him and, raising her chin, grinned, - It serves you right!
"All right, stop messing around," Mom threatened with a finger and glared at Dad. Fergus raised two hands and continued to laugh.
Madeline is really happy. Their family has always been friendly. Of course, there are quarrels, but the conflict quickly passes after the pope pretends to grab his heart and pretend to be ill. She'd always wondered why he worked for the Ministry of Magic instead of some theater, a profession that suited him better.
"Baby..." my mother purred, and slowly walked over to my father, putting her hand on his shoulder. - Tomorrow you will enter a new stage of your life… And my father and I would like to have a little celebration, because you are already so big. Mom wiped away an imaginary tear and smiled. - Hogwarts is a great place where great people have studied and are studying, and I hope you will become one of them… We raised you right.
***
Maddie turned eleven in May. She was very much looking forward to this day, because, like all other children, the letter from Hogwarts must be delivered on time. For a very long time, the girl sat near the front door and looked through the mail hole. And so, at exactly 12: 00, the coveted envelope flew into the Mortimer house, and to a joyful squeak, Madeline ran to her parents ' room. On the same day, the whole family went to Diagon Alley to buy things for the next school year. Of course, she had already walked the streets of Diagon Alley, and each time she did not want to leave there. These old bookstores, the famous Ollivander wand shop, the Gringotts Bank, and the robed wizards all fueled the fire of the desire to go to the School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
And she was also worried about the question: "What faculty will they determine?". Slytherin ... Gryffindor ... Hufflepuff ... Ravenclaw ... it's so hard to choose one thing, because each department is good in its own way. After numerous attempts to weigh all the pros and cons, the young sorceress could not come to a single decision. Even talking to her father didn't help her make such a difficult and responsible decision.
"Honey, I understand that this is a difficult choice that can really change your future life. The entire Mortimer family studied and graduated from Slytherin, and I'd like you to be there, too. But we are different, and if you don't want to be in this department, the Sorting Hat will take your wish into account.»

After this conversation, it became even harder, but curly was sure that tomorrow everything would be fine, and she would make the right choice.
"Maddie?" Where are you hovering? "Honey, I think she's gone to Hogwarts ahead of time," my father snapped in front of me.…
- What? Madeline woke up. - Dad! I didn't go anywhere, I was just thinking. I muttered back and hurriedly started eating my birthday cake.
***
After a while, when the cake was finished and the plates were cleared away, Madeline went up to her room and began to look carefully at her room. It was medium in size: yellow wallpaper with a simple pattern made the room visually larger, to the right of the door was a small desk, on which were scattered notebooks and some other accessories. A large black bookcase that didn't fit into the room at all, a gray little sofa that the girl had chosen herself and kept with it even after moving in, and a small bed that was so soft that Maddie often couldn't get up.
The girl went to the desk where the wand was lying.
"The Magic Wand… The real... my ... " - thought the girl. She still couldn't believe that in just a few hours she would be going to the school of her dreams. Maddie made a promise that she would learn best and please her parents. She really wanted to be a Great Sorceress.
After twirling her wand and looking at it from all sides, her gaze darted to Katie, the owl that had been bought for her in Diagon Alley. She was so small, with a brownish-white coloring and big golden eyes. Madeline had always had a special connection with animals, even though she had never had a pet before Katie.
Smiling at the owl, the girl placed her wand on the table and began to prepare for bed.
"Honey?" "What's that?" came a voice from the other side of the door, and the next second my mother's head popped out."May I?" — what is it? " she asked, to which she received a nod from her daughter. She crept into the room, and Maddie smiled. She didn't have any makeup on now, she looked so homely, but that didn't stop her from being beautiful. Sitting carefully on the edge of the bed, Frideswida leaned over and kissed her daughter on the forehead, still smiling. In her heart, she was happy for her, because Medeline reminded her so much of her childhood, when she also opened her cherished letter with a sinking heart and waited for her departure for school.
- My dad and I are so proud of you... know that no matter what choice you make on the distribution, we love you and will always support you! Mom whispered.
— I know… It's just that I'm scared — " the sorceress replied, and felt tears begin to gather in the corner of her eyes. She was really scared of the distribution. She couldn't stop thinking about it.
- Honey… Don't worry... " her mother hugged her daughter, and the girl felt a soothing warmth. Pulling away, she placed her hands on Madeline's cheeks and looked into her eyes. - Listen to your heart… You've always been a responsible and serious girl, so I understand you. Trust your sixth sense and you won't make a mistake — " she said, and with another hug, she quietly left the room, saying good night.
"Thank you," Maddie whispered, and a few minutes later she was lost in the realm of Morpheus, looking forward to tomorrow.

Hogwarts Needs Archaeologists, Part 1: Fantastic Antiquities and Where to Find Them
By Adrián Maldonado
The Harry Potterverse is crawling with ancient artefacts and old magic. That doesn’t make it a story about archaeology as such – there is very little effort from the protagonists to do more than treasure-hunt (and in at least one case, tomb-raid) to collect and then destroy these artefacts. In one sense, the Harry Potter cycle is a parable of Fantastic Antiquities and How to Break Them.
Tom Riddle, Tomb Raider (source)
Which is why I haven’t felt the need to do an ‘archaeology of Harry Potter’ post on this blog. But then I went back to the books again. Well, sort of. I am lucky enough to share a timeline with the Binge Mode podcast by the superheroic duo Mallory Rubin and Jason Concepcion. Their breakdown of the books and films, chapter by chapter and scene by scene, with added detail culled from the wider (so wide) Potter canon, has reawakened my appreciation for the depth of JK’s creation. And, this should surprise absolutely no one by now, it makes me think there’s lessons for archaeologists in the Potterverse.
This will take more than one blog post to tease out. To begin with, we can start by looking at the vast array of antiquities which feature in the books’ own timeline. From there, we can explore how archaeology might work in the wizarding world, and then bring it back to reflections on Rowling’s uses of the past more generally. Speaking of the past, if you don’t want books from 20 years ago spoiled, well, tough look, my guy.
Medieval archaeology
Getting medieval in Diagon Alley (source)
To begin in the most obvious place, there is a lot in the wizarding world which owes its origins to the Middle Ages. According to Rowling’s Pottermore website, Diagon Alley and its major landmarks such as the Leaky Cauldron and Gringotts go back to c. 1500, retaining a ramshackle medieval aesthetic. The prison of Azkaban originated as the fortress of the fifteenth-century sorcerer Ezkidris. Even things which don’t appear obviously medieval are revealed to be medieval on Pottermore: the Quidditch World Cup has been played since 1473, and Floo powder, the magical form of transport, was invented in the thirteenth century by Ignatia Wildsmith (which, if I have another daughter, I will definitely adopt as a name).
The structural medievalism of the Potterverse includes Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry itself, a ponderous castle-university suffused with old magic. Oddly for Britain’s premier (only?) centre of magical learning, we do not seem to know exactly how old it is, but its founders all seem to have lived in the tenth century according to Pottermore. This would make it earlier than the first Muggle universities, themselves a product of the twelfth century and later. It is interesting to think that the robe-wearing denizens of Oxbridge and St Andrews are merely replicating earlier Hogwarts traditions.
Echoes of Hogwarts (source)
What is less immediately obvious is that Hogwarts’ medieval origins are communicated largely through material culture. The Sorting Hat belonged to founder Godric Gryffindor, and so is at least a thousand years old. The Mirror of Erised is also said to be ancient, though we are vague on dates. Does age confer magical properties, or have these objects survived due to the power of their magic? It can’t be the latter, as we are continually reminded of the precarious state of antiquities in the Potterverse. The Hogwarts houses retain stories about early medieval artefacts associated with the lives of their founders, including Rowena Ravenclaw’s lost diadem, Helga Hufflepuff’s cup, and Gryffindor’s Sword; Slytherin House has no equivalent relic-mascot although it does boast its own Chamber of Secrets (not a euphemism). Each of these objects is lost, stolen, or defiled in the course of these stories.
Ravenclaw’s diadem was lost almost as soon as it was made, and Slytherin’s Locket was never kept in Hogwarts, showing the somewhat less than reverential treatment of these artefacts, even among those who should best appreciate their value. More on Slytherin’s personal effects later, but it may be worth noting here that his Chamber was until lately populated with a living balrog, I mean Basilisk, which was at least as ancient as Slytherin before its murder by a student dangerously swinging another medieval artefact in 1998. Guys. Lock down your antiquities.
Days without an accident on site: 0 (source)
Of these artefacts, only the Sword of Gryffindor was curated to any extent, even if only as a wall-hanging which, let me repeat, students were allowed to handle. Hufflepuff’s cup was kept in the common room of its founder’s house, allowing it to be stolen and inhabited with cursed fragments of soul which almost led to the demise of the rules-based wizarding world order. In the end, Helga’s cup was found in a damn bank vault instead of a climate-controlled museum store. Listen, a secure, alarmed case may not have stopped Voldemort, but we could have at least saved these precious witnesses of wizarding origins from being callously destroyed in the war. Who will be the wizarding Mortimer Wheeler next time?
Excavating Hogwarts
Reading through Pottermore, it transpires that paying no heed to the medieval material world our protagonists live in is actively causing them harm. Two of Voldemort’s horcruxes, Slytherin’s Locket and Marvolo Gaunt’s Ring, date back to the early medieval period, but were kept as personal possessions passed down the Gaunt family line, allowing them to be easily stolen or sold, and, again, be haunted by evil curses. Guys. Where do I send my CV to develop a course in Material Culture Studies at Hogwarts? Better yet, let’s make it a MOOC, train members of the public, and then maybe next time someone tries to pawn an ancient relic our world isn’t threatened by cursed archaeology.
Please don’t drink from the archaeology (source)
My favourite revelation is that the Hogwarts pensieve, the expositional device in Dumbledore’s office which allows Harry to experience flashback sequences along with the reader, is a noted antiquity itself. It is said to be a stone basin inscribed with Saxon runes, and to have been found buried on the spot where Hogwarts would be built.
I can’t just pass this by. Why would a pensieve be buried? We know that wizards are buried with their wands, as recounted to plot-driving effect in Dumbledore’s case. It also transpires that, like wands, pensieves are very personal items, and are customarily buried with their owners along with any memories they have stored. What an incredible boon this would be for a wizarding archaeologist! And how well would this explain all the now-empty vessels we have found used as grave goods since prehistory, usually explained by us dull-minded archaeologists as ‘food-offerings’. Along with the spell priori incantatem, which allows one to see the last few spells a wand was used for, an archaeowitch encountering a burial furnished with wand and pensieve would have an unparalleled insight into the lives and deaths of the wizarding dead.
Back to the Hogwarts pensieve, then, we have a massive stone basin inscribed in Saxon runes, which would be rather out of place in the early medieval Scottish highlands, where Hogwarts is based. Is this a disturbed wizard’s tomb or a ritualised offering in a wetland setting? Once upon a time, this find would be taken as evidence for Anglo-Saxon invasion, but now we recognize that objects could be transported for a variety of reasons, and indeed are themselves more likely to be used in votive deposits due to the value they have accrued in the journey. It would certainly merit further investigation whether the Hogwarts loch was chosen by its founders not for its now-isolated and depopulated landscape, itself a product of fairly recent historical processes, but because it had an existing heritage as a site of ritual deposition. We can only hope, for the sake of its students, that the founders undertook some due-diligence magical remote sensing to detect any complicating factors from buried magic, dark or light, before undertaking a major construction project. But beyond health and safety concerns, I feel that we have lost something else by not recording what has presumably been a cult place.
A medieval inheritance
Pottermore also traces the origins of several major wizarding families to the Middle Ages, most notably the Malfoys. Their lineage can be traced back to Armand Malfoy, who helped William the Bastard become Conqueror of England in the real-world timeline: “Having rendered unknown, shady (and almost certainly magical) services to King William I, Malfoy was given a prime piece of land in Wiltshire, seized from local landowners, upon which his descendants have lived for ten consecutive centuries.” In gratitude for their help with the Norman Conquest, he was granted a manor, which has passed down the family for 1000 years to Draco Malfoy. The mansion itself is said to be filled with ancient magical and muggle artefacts and priceless artwork, as so many stately homes were by the nineteenth century. Many of Britain’s museums were founded through bequests of such private collections, and these would make an interesting, if dangerous, Dark Magic wing of a Wizarding Museum. Given the spectacular fall from grace of the Malfoy family in the second wizarding war, I do worry about the status of the Malfoy collection, and whether it is at risk of being hived off in auction. The Draco Malfoy essay does reveal that he still lives in the manor with its artefacts after the war, so we still live in hope that this heritage resource has not been lost.
Even dark artefacts need curators (source)
In light of their family history, it would be easy to laugh off the Malfoys’ malevolence as the entitlement that comes from old money, but it should be noted that Harry Potter is a noted trust-fund baby himself. For all his remarkable magical prowess, Harry Potter’s destiny is also down to some serious inherited privilege. His medieval progenitor Linfred of Stinchcombe, who also lived in the Norman era, built up the family’s wealth through his famous inventions, including potions like Skele-gro. Their marriage into a wealthy family in Godric’s Hollow is also auspicious – as home to the Peverils and the Dumbledores, whose stories are so indelibly entwined in the history of wizarding Britain, this little village in England’s west country seems to have been the epicentre of magical achievement for a millennium. Something in the water, perhaps? Or a self-segregating community of elite families? It is through these connections that the Potter family came into possession of one of the Deathly Hallows, the invisibility cloak, in another form of inheritance which increasingly looks like the secret of Harry’s success.
Godric’s Hollow - in dire need of graveyard survey (source)
The Hallows themselves are the key to Dumbledore and Harry’s success, and Voldemort’s undoing, Unbeknownst to many, the Resurrection Stone, invisibility cloak and Elder Wand all seem to be inventions of the Peveril brothers in the thirteenth century. We know this partly because Harry and Hermione stumble on Ignotus Peveril’s medieval gravestone in the churchyard of Godric’s Hollow, clearly marked with the sign of the Deathly Hallows, at which point things begin to come together. Basically, Voldemort is able to be defeated because he only trafficked in antiquities, without researching their archaeological context – but in fairness, neither did Dumbledore and Harry until very late in the game. A simple bit of churchyard recording may have brought this to the attention of local history buffs much sooner, and we may all have been safer for it. Basically, folks, local heritage is all of our heritage, and is not just for tourists obsessively chasing only their own family history.
Potter’s pedigree
And so we come to genealogy, which is the secret engine of this cycle of stories, just as it seems to be in so many of our favourite fantasy worlds. The objects, people and places profiled here all seem to be the remnants of stories which seem to begin no earlier than the tenth century or so. But it is clear that the wizarding world existed before then, and the limits of our vision can be explained by the fact that the first university was established at that time, and presumably the recording of historical events as well. In short, the narrow focus on a small pool of influential families and their feuds are the unresolved business of the formation of medieval kingdoms of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, as indeed is so much of our own contemporary politics. What if our consciousness extended to the messier early medieval kingdoms, or (whisper it) prehistory? Just how problematic would a wizarding archaeology be? And could it free us from the Great Men and Their Battles vision of the human journey? Let’s pick up our trowel-wands and find out.

Light in the Darkness - Chapter 10: The Letter
A huge thank you to @bounding-heart for editing this chapter! <3

ff.net
After Harry left with Draco and Scorpius, Albus finished his sandwich and went upstairs to his bedroom. He changed into his pyjamas and fell asleep the moment his head touched the pillow.
When Albus woke up the next morning, he was fully rested. Despite traumatic events of the previous day, he hadn’t had any nightmares, in fact he hadn’t dreamt at all. Yawning, he reached for the watch on the bedside table and tapped its face twice. The clock quietly announced that it was nine o’clock.
Stretching and still yawning, Albus dressed in the most comfortable clothes and went to the bathroom to get ready for the new day. He returned to his room and went to the desk, reaching for his wand. Then he remembered that Mortimer had taken his wand, as well as his white cane. At least his parents had bought two or three canes in case he lost the first one but lost wand meant another trip to the Diagon Alley. Albus sighed. Another lost wand and this one hardly lasted a year. He liked it a lot, it was better matched than the previous one. He would miss it.
Fortunately, he didn’t need the cane to navigate the house. Using banister and walls for directions, Albus went downstairs and safely reached the kitchen.
“Albus!” Ginny said when he entered the room. “Good morning. Are you hungry? I've made scrambled eggs. Would you like some?”
“Yes, please. I'm starving,” Albus said, sitting at the table.
Ginny prepared the breakfast and sat down beside Albus. They were quiet for a while, Albus eating the scrambled eggs and toasts, Ginny sipping her coffee.
“How are you feeling?” Ginny finally asked, when Albus was finishing his meal. “Did you sleep well?”
“I’m fine. I was just tired and scared, nothing a good and long sleep can’t cure.”
“Mortimer- he didn’t hurt you?” Scorpius and Albus had told their parents everything that had happened yesterday but Albus suspected his mum thought he was hiding some things.
“Mum, I told you already. He only cast one spell on us, most probably Stupefy. He scared us and exhausted us mentally but he didn’t hurt us.”
“Still, I think you should go to St Mungo’s for a check-up.”
Albus rolled his eyes. “Mum, please, I don’t want to go to the hospital. All I need is a few days of rest and peace and I'll be ready to go back to school. I can go back to school, right?” Albus asked, uncertain.
“If you want to, yes, of course. Hogwarts is safe but I'm afraid you shouldn’t visit Hogsmeade until Mortimer is in custody.”
Albus nodded. He didn’t really have a desire to visit Hogsmeade any time soon.
“At least allow me to call Healer Austin. She'll come to our house and examine you. Is that okay?”
Albus sighed. “Okay, fine. Where’s Lily and James?”
“They’re back at Hogwarts. They know you’re safe so there was no reason for them to miss classes.”
They heard an Apparition crack coming from the front door. Ginny stood up so quickly that her chair fell down and ran out of the kitchen.
“Harry! Where have you been?! Did you catch Mortimer?”
“Hi, Ginny,” Harry said and Albus heard his parents kissing. “Did Albus wake up?”
“Yes, he’s in the kitchen.”
Albus heard his parents entering the kitchen and sitting at the table.
“How are you feeling, Albus?” Harry asked.
“I’m fine, really. Mum’s already asked me,” Albus said impatiently. “Dad, did you find him?”
“No, I didn’t. I’m sorry. He was already gone when we arrived at the house.”
Albus hung his head in disappointment. He hadn’t really expected that Mortimer would stay in the house after their escape but still he had hoped.
A clink of porcelain and a smell suggested that Ginny put a cup of coffee in front of Harry.
“Thanks,” he said. He drank in silence for a while. “When we entered the house,” he started, “it was empty. I hoped we would find some trace, a clue, anything that could help us follow and catch him, but he’s clever. He left no traces. He must have left the house on foot because there was no Apparition mark in the house or nearby. He probably Disapparated in the city centre where his mark would be indistinguishable from other wizards’. He left nothing that may suggest where he lives or where he may go to. The neighbours saw nothing, they said that the family that lives in the house went for a holiday and were due to return in a week.”
“You found absolutely nothing?” Ginny asked.
“Well, we found three things. On the kitchen table lay two wands. Your wand, Albus, and Scorpius’s.” Harry put Albus’s wand on the table.
Albus took the wand and hid it in his pocket. ??? “I’m glad I don’t have to make another trip to Ollivanders.”
“And the third thing?” Ginny asked.
“It’s a note from Mortimer,” Harry said. “It lay on the desk in the room in which you were held. Mortimer must have left it there before your escape and in your haste, Scorpius didn’t notice it. Here, it’s a note for you, Albus. It’s in Braille,” Harry said and Albus felt something touching his hand.
He took it and discovered that it was a small piece of parchment. He ran his fingers slowly over the dots. The parchment held only a few sentences which left him in pure bewilderment. He read it carefully again to make sure he understood everything.
“Did you read it?” he asked his dad in a small voice.
“Yes, it has words written over the dots.”
“May I read it?” Ginny asked and Albus passed her the note. “Albus,” she read aloud. “I've learned everything I wanted. You and Scorpius are free to go. I will never bother you again, you are safe. Tell your father that he should stop searching for me as he will never find me. Edward Mortimer.”
Everyone was silent for a long while.
“That- that doesn’t make any sense,” Ginny finally said. “Why did he kidnap you if he let you go after a few hours? What was his reason? We thought he wanted a ransom or that he meant to harm you further and he- he just held you for a while, told you his story, asked you a few questions and then just set you free?”
Albus sat in silence, remembering his talk with Mortimer from the day before.
“That’s the reason he kidnapped me,” he said. “To ask me a few questions. He told me this when I asked him why he had kidnapped me. He said he needed to ask me a few things and that it was important for his research. He couldn’t do it back in August because he had to run away when Mr Parker came with his dog.”
“What were those questions?” asked Harry.
“They all came basically to one question: the choice between pain and death. That seemed the most crucial to him.”
“Did he tell you about the results of his so-called research?” asked Harry, saying the word ‘research’ with disgust.
“No, he said that he was almost sure his theory was right but that he needed few more cases to prove it.”
“So it means he’ll hurt people again. Did he make any mention, any suggestion where he may go next?”
“No, he was very careful. He only said that he had tortured people all around the world and that you would never find him.”
“We’ll see. I wouldn’t be so sure if I were him,” Harry said grimly. “I’ll rest for a bit and then I'm back at the Ministry. I will do everything in my power to find him.”
Harry hugged Albus and kissed Ginny, then left the kitchen. Albus finished his tea and went back to his bedroom. There he wrote a short letter to Scorpius, informing him of everything Harry had found in the house.
Four days later Albus returned to Hogwarts. While he was at home, Healer Austen visited him and evaluated his mental and physical state. She confirmed that Albus hadn’t been hit with the Cruciatus Curse. She also gave him a stronger analgesic potion for a couple of weeks, afraid that stress and traumatic events may induce pain attacks. Scorpius visited Albus two days after their escape. He was delighted to get his wand back and discussed with Albus at length the message left by Mortimer.
Harry Apparated to the gates outside Hogwarts with Albus. It was early evening. The withered grass was covered with frost, the November chill was felt in the air. With Albus holding his forearm, they walked slowly towards the castle, glowing with the light of many windows in the darkness.
The Entrance Hall was brightly lit. From the Great Hall came cheerful sounds and clattering of cutlery. Albus had already eaten at home so they turned towards the entrance to the dungeons. A flight of stairs and a few winding corridors later, they reached the bare stone wall which was the doorway to the Slytherin Common Room.
“What’s the password?” Harry asked his son.
“Dum spiro, spero,” Albus said and the solid wall disappeared, revealing a short passage.
There were just a few students in the common room; most were still in the Great Hall. Harry smiled and greeted them, then led Albus to his dormitory. Albus gave another password and they entered the room.
As was expected, only one person was in the bedroom. Upon seeing his friend, Scorpius leaped up from behind his desk. In the process he knocked down a heavy book he had been reading. A loud thud made Albus flinched slightly in fear.
“I’m sorry,” said Scorpius, smiling apologetically. “It’s just a book.” He picked it up and laid back on the desk. He walked to Albus and took his hand. Albus embraced him tightly and whispered something in his ear.
Scorpius laughed. “It’s been only two days! But I missed you too.” He kissed Albus’s cheek.
Harry smiled and went to Albus’s bed. He put his bag on it and started to pull out a few clothes Albus had brought from home.
“Your pyjamas are on the pillow,” Harry said.
Albus nodded.
“Which one is your wardrobe?” Harry asked.
“The one nearest the bed, the left side of it,” Albus said.
Harry opened the old wooden wardrobe, which was decorated with elaborate serpent patterns, and started to put Albus’s clothes in proper places, all organised according to colour.
“How are you feeling, Scorpius?” he asked.
“I’m perfect,” said Scorpius, sitting on his bed. “Dad dragged me to St Mungo’s the next day. They examined me thoroughly and said that everything was fine. Of course I was fine, but dad didn’t want to listen to me. He let me stay at home one day more but I had to return to Hogwarts on Monday’s evening. Did you find anything new about Mortimer?”
“Not yet,” said Harry, closing the wardrobe. “I have a team dedicated solely to his case and they work on it twenty-four hours a day. I also contacted the governments of other countries and asked if they had similar incidents. I also warned them that Mortimer may attack soon, if what he told you is true and he’s still looking for victims to conduct his so-called research.”
“Do you believe his note that Albus is safe?” Scorpius asked, looking in Albus’s direction.
Harry sighed. “I want to believe it. But I think it’s very probable that he’s done with Albus. He got what he wanted and then he let you go. But who knows what he’ll do in the future? He's insane.”
Scorpius nodded. “I hope you’ll catch him soon. He’s hurt too many people already.”
Harry went to Albus who was rummaging in his desk’s drawer. “I’ll be going. I want to say hi to James and Lily before I go back home.”
“Sure,” Albus said and embraced his dad. Harry smiled and held him tightly.
“If anything is wrong, if you need anything, don’t hesitate to inform us,” Harry whispered in Albus’s ear. “Write to us or go straight to Professor McGonagall, alright? Don't hide anything.”
Albus nodded. “I’ll be fine, dad. Don't worry.”
Harry kissed his forehead. “I know you will. Good luck with your classes. Bye, Scorpius.”
“Goodbye, Mr. Potter.”
Harry opened the door but before he went out, he looked at Scorpius. Silently he indicated him to follow.
Scorpius sprang from the bed. “I’ll be right back, Albus. I left my book in the common room.”
Harry went to the common room, followed closely by Scorpius. They stood in the dark corner, far from the few students in the room.
“Scorpius, I have a small request,” Harry whispered. Scorpius listened intently. “Could you keep a close eye on Albus? I know you always do, but could you be extra careful? I asked Albus to tell me when anything is wrong but I'm worried he might not do it. So, if you see anything strange or odd in his behaviour, if anything worries you, please, inform me immediately. Or insist Albus on doing that himself.”
“Of course, Mr Potter,” Scorpius said. “Is there anything I should especially pay attention to?”
“No, not at the moment. Albus had a meeting with Healer Austen and she said that he was fine. I haven’t noticed anything alarming in his behaviour either. But that kidnapping was a highly traumatic event and Ginny and I are worried that some symptoms of mental struggle may appear later. And we can’t keep Albus with ourselves to keep a watch on him. I already asked Headmistress and Madame Pomfrey to look after him but no one is closer to Albus than you.”
“I’ll do my best, Mr Potter.”
“Thank you, Scorpius. It eases my mind.” Harry put a hand on Scorpius’s shoulder. “Good luck in your classes.”
Scorpius smiled and bid him farewell. When Harry turned to leave the room, he saw a small boy, probably a first year, standing in front of him with a paper and a quill in his hand.
“Mr Potter?” he asked shyly. “Can I ask for an autograph?”
Harry smiled and took the quill from the boy’s hand.
November and December passed in a haze of classes, homework, tests and learning for upcoming O.W.L.s. Adding to that Braille lessons twice a week and prefect’s duties, Albus and Scorpius hardly had time for anything else. On a good note, Albus’s pain attacks became milder and less frequent and Healer Austin allowed him to slightly reduce the dose of the painkilling potion.
Harry worked hard on finding Edward Mortimer but didn’t make any progress. New cases emerged and he couldn’t spend as much time and resources on the Mortimer’s search as he would like, but still he spent every free minute on trying to catch his son’s torturer.
After two weeks of blessed peace and laziness of Christmas time, Albus and Scorpius reluctantly returned to Hogwarts. The first thing Scorpius noticed after entering the common room was a group of their classmates gathered in front of the notice board. He dragged Albus in their direction.
“What’s going on?” Scorpius asked Hayden.
“Hi Scorpius, Albus.” He nodded in greetings. “There’s a schedule of meetings with Professor Warmund regarding our career plans.”
“Great!” Scorpius said. He let go of Albus’s hand and pushed his way through the crowd of students to the board. He found their names and, smiling, returned to Albus.
“We have meetings on Wednesday next week. Nine and nine-thirty. You're right after me, even though the rest of students are listed alphabetically.”
“That’s nice of Warmund to list us together.”
“There’s a bunch of leaflets on the table with information about any career you like,” Hayden said, pointing towards the big table near the window.
Scorpius led Albus to the table. As Albus sat down, Scorpius noticed a stack of leaflets laying neatly apart from the scattered mess of the others.
“Look, these are in Braille,” Scorpius said with a smile, handing the leaflets to Albus.
“Brilliant!” Albus started to run his fingers over the dots. Scorpius sat down opposite him and looked at his boyfriend with pride. He couldn’t believe what a great progress Albus had done in reading Braille in just a few months.
“Are you still thinking about becoming a historian?” Albus asked, putting away the brochure about an Auror career.
“Yes, and every day I’m more and more sure that that’s what I’d really like to do. I was considering other options, a Healer for example, but history is my true passion and I’m the happiest reading about and researching the past. There are so many neglected parts of our history that I want to research further. I also want to popularise learning about history among people, especially young people, show them that it’s both interesting and important.”
“You have very ambitious plans,” Albus said. “And I know you’re going to fulfil them all. You're right that too many people ignore history and you’re the best person to convince them that it’s not boring. You convinced me.” Albus grinned.
“It wasn’t very hard,” Scorpius said. “And what about you? Have you talked with Mr Parry about your professional future?”
“Not yet. I forgot to ask him about it. But I'll talk with him tomorrow.” Albus sighed. “I really don’t know what I can do. I wanted to work with animals but now it’s rather impossible. Every job seems impossible now.”
“Hey, hey.” Scorpius stood up and sat next to Albus, taking his hand in his. “Don’t say that. I'm sure there’s plenty jobs you can still do. Mr Parry will help you find something. And you still have time to decide. Just continue subjects you like and are good at. You can choose a job later. You don’t even have to start working straight after Hogwarts.”
“I know. It’s just- I want to be like everyone else and it’s sometimes hard to accept that I can’t do a lot of things anymore.”
Scorpius stroked Albus’s hand in comfort. He didn’t know what to say. Any words would be pointless.
Albus sighed. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to feel sorry for myself.”
“You have every right to feel that way,” Scorpius said vehemently. “You work so hard that I sometimes worry that you push yourself too hard. No one will hold it against you or think less of you if you can’t do something or need more time to do it. It’s marvellous how much you’ve already accomplished.”
Albus smiled shyly. “Thank you. But I wouldn’t have done it if you hadn’t helped me. Without you I'd be lost. Literally.”
“Remember that I'm always by your side. You can count on me.”
“I know.” Albus groped with his hand until he found Scorpius’s face and kissed him fiercely.

The next day Albus and Scorpius were sitting at the Slytherin table in the Great Hall, eating breakfast. The day was sunny and shafts of sunlight were streaming through the tall windows. Their first lesson was Care of Magical Creatures and folded coats, caps and scarfs were lying beside them on the bench.
“Scorpius, could you pass me some toast?” Albus asked and moment later stifled a huge yawn.
“Sure.” Scorpius put a toast on his plate. “But what you truly need is a coffee.”
“You’re right. You can pour me some,” Albus said and held his cup in Scorpius’s direction.
He felt Scorpius pour the aromatic liquid into his mug. He raised it to his nose and inhaled heavy aroma before drinking. As he was putting the cup back on the table, he heard an unmistakeable rustle of owls’ wings. Moments later an owl landed on the table between him and Scorpius.
“Alsvin!” Scorpius exclaimed. “What have you got for me?”
Albus heard a sound of a ripping paper as Scorpius unpacked the parcel brought by his dad’s owl. Scorpius sighed.
“What is it?” Albus asked, stroking Alsvin’s soft feathers.
“A book,” Scorpius said in a resigned tone. “Transfiguration textbook. I haven’t even noticed yet that I forgot to take it.”
“You always forget something,” Albus laughed. “I wonder why I haven’t given you a Remembrall yet.”
Before Scorpius could retort, a second owl came to their table. It sat next to Albus and started to nibble his hand delicately.
“Something for me?” Albus asked and groped around until he found the owl and the letter tied around its leg. The moment he untied the letter, the owl spread its wings and flew away.
“It wasn’t Kirjava?” Their family owl always stayed with him for a while, letting him pet her feathers and feed her some treats.
“No, it was an unfamiliar owl,” Scorpius said.
Albus run his fingers over the envelope and found a line of dots in the middle. He read his name and his current location. There was no return address on the back of the envelope. With increased curiosity he opened the envelope and pulled out the letter. He run his fingers over dots on the first page and read:
Dear Albus,
Once again, I want to assure you that you’re safe and I promise I won’t harm you ever again. Before you throw away this letter in anger, allow me to inform you that I have finished my research and I want to share my conclusions with you. After everything I think this is the least you deserve.
Albus gasped. “It’s from Mortimer,” he whispered.
“What!?” Scorpius said and moved closer to Albus, presumably to look at the letter. “It’s written only in Braille. What does he say?”
“I only read the beginning. He says that he finished his research and want to share his conclusions with me.”
“Then read on. At last we’ll know why you survived the curse for so long.”
Albus nodded and started reading again.
As I explained on our last meeting, for many years I conducted research aim to discover why some people survive the Cruciatus Curse and don’t go insane even after very long exposure to the pain. You're one of the specials, as am I. During my research I found out that more people than I expected are in this group.
At first I thought it was Occlumency. I knew that it was the only known method that protects the mind. But I wasn’t an Occlumens. And many people that I tortured during my research weren’t Occlumens either. There were children, Muggles, who couldn’t know of Occlumency. So I ruled the Occlumency theory out and searched for something else.
I thought maybe it was love. Loving someone, being loved by someone, knowing that there are people waiting for you; maybe love is what keeps people sane. I started questioning those who survived the curse about their lives. I knew their answers were truthful, the need to avoid pain makes you honest. I found out that not everyone knew love. There were some people who were lonely, miserable, even evil, who didn’t have a family, friends, who didn’t love anyone. And still they survived. (By surviving I mean they didn’t go insane. Some of them went blind or deaf or paralysed, but they didn’t lose their minds.)
I got frustrated and angry that I couldn’t find any answer. At one point, I found a wretched beggar who had the most miserable life. He was completely alone, he lived on streets, ate from trash bins, didn’t have a leg and was sick. A death would be a mercy for him. And yet he survived the curse for seventeen minutes. After everything I said I would kill him. I don’t know why I wanted to kill him. I’d never killed anyone before. Maybe I thought it would be an act of mercy, maybe I was so frustrated and I wanted to vent it all out. And then he said something that changed my whole perspective.
He begged me not to kill him. When I asked him why, he simply said he wanted to live. Upon my questions of why he wanted to live if he had so little to live for, he said again that he just wanted to live, that he couldn’t explain why. Even when I presented him with the choice between quick death and pain, he chose pain. And life.
I left him and continued my research. But now, when I found someone who'd survived the curse, I gave them the choice. I also asked them about life, death, their reasons to live. With each person I began to understand the thing that protects the mind. It wasn’t Occlumency or magical power or love.
It was the will to live. You'll say that most people have the will to live. It appears in most of them it is too weak, too feeble and breaks under the enormous pain. Yet some of us have strong wills, resistant to almost anything. And I think it has to be a conscious choice. That during the torture comes the moment when you have to decide if you want to live, even if that means more pain, or if you’re just letting go. That’s the moment when most people choose the second option and lose their mind. From those that survived, not even one person chose death when I gave them the choice.
My theory proved right again and again and I believe I have a large enough number of cases to present my conclusions publicly. I intend to write a book about my research and publish it. I hope to initiate the worldwide debate.
When I started my research, I thought I would find a new way to survive the curse, other than the Occlumency. But I'm not sure if the will to live is something you can learn. It certainly changes during one's lifetime, it depends on our experiences, views, faith, people we meet and many other things. But it’s something you have or don’t have and before you’re put in a strenuous situation, you can’t be sure if your will to live is enough.
You're strong, Albus; be proud of it. You proved it not only by surviving the curse for much longer than most people but also by bravely living after you lost your sight. I wish you long and fulfilling life.
Edward Mortimer
Albus put down the letter. He didn’t know what to say or what to think. His thoughts were running madly in his head.
“Albus?” Scorpius whispered and put a hand on his forearm. “Are you okay? What does the letter say?”
“Not here,” Albus said at last and stood up, clutching the letter. He took his white cane and bag and left the Great Hall. Scorpius followed closely behind him.
“Where are we going?” he asked when they left the Great Hall.
“I need an empty classroom,” Albus said. “I’ll read the letter to you there.”
“Alright.” Scorpius took Albus’s hand and led him to the nearest classroom. He locked it with a spell so no one would disturb them.
Albus sat down at the nearest desk and put the letter in front of him. Scorpius joined him but waited patiently until Albus spoke:
“I’ll read the letter to you. Could you write it down in the meantime? I want to send it to my parents. There's probably a spell that can change Braille to a normal alphabet but I don’t know it.”
“Of course,” Scorpius said and rummaged in his bag to retrieve paper and quill.
“Please, just write it down now. Don't comment on anything. We'll talk about it when I finish reading.”
Albus started to slowly read the letter aloud. He heard Scorpius’s quill scratching on the paper as he quickly wrote down every word. Occasionally he gave a small gasp but refrain from saying anything. When Albus finished reading, they both were silent for a long time.
“The will to live. That's the thing that saved you,” Scorpius said at last. “That’s why Mortimer made you choose: death or pain.”
“Death or life. That was the ultimate choice. He needed to know how strong my will is and if it fits in his theory.”
“Honestly, if this theory is right, and it seems it is, then it is somewhat beautiful yet simple. You don’t need great magical power or Occlumency or some other technique to save your mind. It's just the will to live, which everyone has. It's similar to love, which saved your father from Voldemort.”
“But it appears most people don’t have strong enough will to survive the prolonged pain,” Albus reminded. “And it makes me angry that Mortimer destroyed so many lives to discover this principle. No magical research is worth sacrificing even one human life.”
“Of course it isn’t,” Scorpius agreed. “But Mortimer doesn’t have any moral objections. He puts knowledge above human life.”
“I wonder why so few people survive the curse. I thought most people have a strong will to live. It seems to me to be one of the most basic and primal features of human beings.”
“I think it is enough in normal circumstances. But the Cruciatus Curse is extreme. I felt it for a couple of seconds and I can’t imagine enduring it even for a few minutes, not to mention for fifteen minutes or more. I wonder if my will would be strong enough.”
Albus grasped Scorpius’s hand. “I’m sure it would.”
“I’d like to think so. But I don’t know. And I hope I’ll never find out.” Scorpius was silent for a while, then continued: “It makes me wonder- maybe everyone has a breaking point? Remember what Mortimer said? That he usually ended the curse when he saw that the victim survived more than fifteen minutes. Maybe if he continued long enough, everyone would eventually give in.”
“You’re probably right,” Albus said. “But it still perplexes me that so few people survive more than a few minutes.” Albus sighed.
“I’m so proud of you, Albus.” Scorpius stroked his cheek. “I can’t even put properly into words how much.”
“Thank you,” Albus said, feeling entirely inadequate of Scorpius’s high regard. “But I don’t think it is something I should be proud of. I agree with Mortimer that the strong will to live is something you either have or don’t have. You can’t learn it. Maybe it can be influenced and strengthen by certain things, like love, friendship, faith or hope. But remember that beggar? He had nothing and yet he wanted to live. He couldn’t explain why. I think it’s a congenital thing, like your height or skin colour. You can’t change that and thus it can’t be something to be overly proud of. You don’t have it because of your merits. Also that’s why people who didn’t survive the curse shouldn’t be considered weak or lesser. They’re just unlucky that they encountered Mortimer or any other evil wizard.”
“You made a very good point,” Scorpius said. “Very clever. But still, I’m proud of you. The way you face the consequences of the curse is remarkable and completely on your own merit. Of this, you should be proud.”
Albus smiled. Even if he wanted, he couldn’t argue with Scorpius on this.
“Do you think your dad will find Mortimer?” Scorpius asked.
“Honestly, I don’t think he will. Mortimer tortured people for several years and no one knew who did those crimes until recently. He's clever and cunning. Maybe he’s not as powerful as Aurors and he’ll probably lose in a duel, but he’s shrewd enough to avoid getting into one. The world is huge, so he’ll probably hide somewhere remote and write his damn book.”
“Hopefully it means he won’t torture any more people,” Scorpius said. “And what about you? If he’s not caught? You can’t spend your whole life in Hogwarts or at home.”
“I won’t. I must admit that I believe him when he says that he won’t harm me anymore. He doesn’t have a reason. He got what he wanted; he doesn’t need me anymore.”
“I hope you’re right.”
Albus stood up. “Could you make a copy of the normal alphabet version of the letter? I must send it to my parents.”
“Of course,” Scorpius said and a moment later Albus felt a subtle rush of magic as Scorpius copied the letter.
“Let’s go to the Owlery, then, “Albus said and took his bag and cane. “We’re going to be late for class, but I'll tell Professor Collingwood that I had an attack and you had to help me.”
As they were walking through the empty castle to the Owlery, Albus felt an overwhelming feeling of calmness and safety washing over him. Until today he hadn’t known how much he needed the answer to the question of why he'd survived. Now, when he had the answer and almost total surety that Mortimer wouldn’t attack him again, he was finally able to put those traumatic events behind him and start a new part of his life.
